A Heart For God
by John Jarvis

As I sat in my study this day, running through my mind was the awesome majesty of God,

how little and insignificant I am without Him,
how Faithful and True He is,
how His Goodness and Mercy and Grace is far beyond my thoughts or understanding,
how empty my vain (fruitless) life is without Him,
how I cling to Him and have never been left alone in the fire,
how His love is infinitely greater for mankind that anything my feeble mind can imagine;

And then my mind goes to:

how unfaithful I am,
how unimportant His purpose is to my busy life,
how my concern isn’t for the souls of men as it should be, but some fleshly thing,
how that the real cause for my existence is minimized to nothingness by the desires of my flesh,
how eternity beckons me and I intend to do great things for God tomorrow, without making preparations today,
how my flesh mercilessly defeats my life day by day for fervency, vitality, and the power of God,
how easlily I slip daily in my profession as a goodly religious man, not producing the Son of God in enemy territory,
how we pleasantly and thoughtlessly mix our worldliness with what should be worship at the house of God,
how the thought of our children and friends and fellow workers in Hell doesn’t move us,
how there is no more a cause worth giving up a meal for, or a few hours in the wee hours of the morning for special prayer,
how day after day I am robbed by my flesh of the victorious life;

Then I begin to think on the Judgement of God:

how we will stand accountable for our deeds in this flesh,
how that one day the Christ spoken of in Revelation 1 will require me to account for everything I ever did, or said, or thought,
how He will righteously judge every thought which went through my mind by my true motive/reaction,
how that on that day I will bring honor/glory to Him by those actions or reproach depending on that true motive,
how so many times I have failed Him because of selfish desires or limited/hesitant actions to His will in my life,

If God doesn’t breathe on this exposition, it will be vain words written by vain flesh, and He won’t breathe on something which isn’t Spirit given, from a right heart and a clean life, and we wonder why God isn’t moving like we want Him to in our church services or in America today, how men can sit in our services unmoved and seemingly untouched by the Spirit of God, it ought not to be!
Jeremiah 5:14 Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.

Where is the God of Abraham, Jacob, and Moses in this 21st Century? Is He Dead, Is God Dead?
Why do we not see the miracuous workings of God now as we did in the days of Noah?
Could it be that our iniquities have come between us and God!

Any thoughts or expositions myself or anyone else might prepare is useless if it falls on deaf ears, or a numb heart. It must find a lodging place in the heart of God’s people actively seeking God’s will and God’s way for their families, their church and this great Country. You know, God’s way has always been a work in the heart of individual men.
I Chronicles 28:9
And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.

Psalms shows us 5 things which will be prevalent in a man/woman after God’s own heart:

1) You’ll love the Word of God, in Psalms 119:97 O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.
2) You’ll love to pray, Psalms 116:1 I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications. 2 Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live.
3) You’ll love to Praise God, Psalms 119:164 Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments. 165 Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.
4) You’ll love and perpetuate unity among the brethren, Psalms 133:1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
5) You’ll hate sin, especially your sin, Psalms 119:104 Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.

Interestingly the book of Psalms opens with the following: Psalms 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

Our battle is over the souls of men, and whatever God might ask us to do in His Word should be insignificant compared to seeing someone saved or right with God. Acts 13: 22 And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will. We need to ask ourselves today, are we doing all God’s will, or are we just picking and choosing which portion of the teachings of God’s Word we will honor in our life.

A sincere heart will be marked by faithfulness to the things of God. Be it known that faithfulness is the manifestation (demonstration) in your heart of your obedience to God’s will over your will. Faithfulness establishes that there has been a heart work and committment which gives God control over your life. If God doesn’t have control over every aspect of your life, then there is a breakdown in the relationship, and something will be lacking. You may rest assured, that breakdown isn't on God's side of the relationship! When your “Purpose” in life is in obedience to God’s Holy Word, then faithfulness will be a by-product of that obedience, not a perfect faithfulness (sinless perfection), but a steadfast/fervent faithfulness to the things God's Word teaches we ought to be as Christians (Christ Likeness).

A Right Heart must be A Willing Heart

Exodus 25:2 Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring me an offering: of every man that giveth it willingly with his heart ye shall take my offering.

A Right Heart must be The Whole Heart

Psalms 119:2 Blessed [are] they that keep his testimonies, [and that] seek him with the whole heart.

A Right Heart must be A Pure Heart

I Timothy 1: 5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:

A Right Heart must be A Servant’s Heart

Ephesians 6:5 Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; 6 Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; 7 With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men: 8 Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free.

A Right Heart must be A Maintained Heart

Luke 12:34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Do you relish the things of God above the things of the world?

A Right Heart brings on the Power and Presence of God

Mark 11:23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

Isaiah 29:13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:

If men would serve God, they will/must serve Him from the heart. I’m afraid in these days not enough emphasis is placed on the sincerity of the heart of man. Sincerity at salvation, and sincerity in service, sincerity in sanctification. We need to develop an extreme/unsurpassed distaste for the ways of Laodicea (lukewarmness). God did! He said I will spew you out of my mouth (Revelation 3:16).

II Corinthians 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

If we are to experience a Move of God or the Power of God in our lives there must be some committment, we must seek for it with all our hearts! If your heart is in it and it’s according to His Word/Will, God will be pleased. So our committment if we are to have and maintain “A Heart for God,” must be that we do all God may ask. Are you motivated to do All of Gods Will? Have you purposed in your heart, “I will do all God asks me to do?”

How long has it been since you went into your prayer closet and prayed until heaven opened and poured out on you a blessing that can’t be put into words and can’t be contained? How long has it been since you’ve felt the touch of the Holy Spirit on your life? There is a battle to be fought! Are you doing your part to help hold up the arms of your pastor and the learders in your church while the battle rages, or are you just another halfhearted bystander/spectator in the work of God.

Some things we might want to consider asking God to help us with at the beginning of the day . . .

Help me Oh’ Lord, to always take council of You, Walking in the Spirit, and may the fruits of Your Spirit be demonstrated in every facet of my life!

Help me not to rebel against the preaching or teaching of your Word!

Help me not to trust in man, nor self, but in You and You only!

Help me Oh’ Lord to always have a song of joy in my heart and may it reflect on my attitude (state of my heart) at all times.

Help me Oh’ Lord to be faithful to seek and do your will each day!

Oh’ Lord, grant me wisdom, knowledge and discernment of your Word!

Help me that my littlest member (the tongue) speak only of goodness, mercy and grace!

Oh’ Lord, may all my devices to be honorable and virtuous, and may I live as Holy a life as a redeemed saint can live!

Help me Oh’ Lord to reverently fear You each moment you give me breath upon this earth!

Help me Oh’ Lord to walk in victory and to make a Godly impact on all I come in contact with this day!

I Thessalonians 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
